The Weight of History, the Power of Apology: Remembering Lifter David Berger 50 Years after the Munich Olympics. A book talk by author Warren Perrin
David Berger (SHHS Class of 1962), a Jewish American weightlifter representing Israel in the Munich Olympics, was one of 11 members of the Israeli team murdered by Palestinian guerrillas on September 5, 1972.
Author Warren Perrin, a close college friend of Berger’s and fellow weightlifter, will discuss his new book which profiles Berger and weightlifter Walter Imahara, and interweaves the political drama surrounding the Games with ethnic cleansing perpetuated against Perrin’s Acadian ancestors, the Japanese Americans and Jews. All three athletes were National Collegiate Weightlifting Champions while attending college in Louisiana.
