Book Buzz:The Woman They Could Not Silence

The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore

In 1860's America, a wife could be committed to an asylum simply for disagreeing with her husband.  Such was the fate of Elizabeth Packard of Manteno, Illinois when her husband Theophilus, a Calvinist Minister, sent her to the Jacksonville Insane Asylum without her consent.  In this carefully researched work, Kate Moore explores Elizabeth's experience, resistance, release, and subsequent efforts to change the laws around forced institutionalization.

Copies of the book will be available at the Main Information desk one month before the discussion.
