PubReads: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Betty Smith)
Set in 1900’s Brooklyn, this heartwarming, coming of age story chronicles the life of Francie, age eleven, and younger brother Neely who live with their Irish immigrant parents. While Dad struggles to find his way in a new country, Mom scrubs floors to put food on the table. Learning to plan ahead and stay practical, Francie must also rely on sheer determination to build a future when her Dad dies unexpectedly, leaving her Mom pregnant and the family adrift.
Copies of the book are available at the Main Library and electronically online through Libby and Hoopla. PubReads meets at the Van Aken District Market Hall (Raider's Space) at 3441 Tuttle Rd., Shaker Heights, OH 44122.
