Bite by Bite: Writing about Food, Family, and Ourselves

Did you help Grandma shell peas? Did your uncle’s barbecue sauce recipe follow him to the grave? Family meals hold lasting and vibrant memories.

Participants will:

  • Engage the senses through short writing prompts that explore taste, smell, texture, and sound as tools for vivid storytelling.
  • Experiment with narrative and perspective.
  • Share brief excerpts in a supportive setting to build confidence, empathy, and connection.
  • Draft or outline one food-centered personal story and leave with a list of suggested publications for submission.

Presenter Annmarie Kelly-Harbaugh is a Shaker resident and author of Here Be Dragons, a memoir about the wonderful misery of raising children. She hosts a literary podcast entitled Wild Precious Life, and teaches at Stanford, Tri-C, and Ashland University.
