PubReads: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Amir and Hassan spend their boyhoods playing in the sport of “kite fighting” in 1970's Kabul, Afghanistan, a time of relative peace. Hassan is a successful "kite runner" for Amir; he knows where the kite will land without watching it. Both boys are motherless but Amir's father, a wealthy merchant, looks out for both even though Hassan's father is just a servant. When his father is critical of him, Amir struggles with jealousy. The friendship reaches a breaking point when Amir abandons Hassan in a conflict with some older boys who physically and sexually assault Hassan. The novel plays out over the next few decades as Amir comes to terms with his guilt and seeks redemption by rescuing Hassan's son during the subsequent social and political turmoil of Afghanistan.
